Start with the building blocks, not a finished routine
Tatkar is Kathak's rhythmic footwork. A beginner learns the spoken syllables, or bol, and the movement together at a controlled pace. Counting a repeating beat cycle helps you understand where a phrase begins and returns, rather than relying only on copying the teacher's feet.
Posture, weight transfer and basic hand pathways give that rhythm a stable foundation. A teacher can separate an arm movement from the footwork, check each part, and then help you combine them. Turns and more complex material are introduced according to readiness, not a promise that every beginner reaches the same milestone in a fixed number of classes.
Live guidance when there is no teacher nearby
An online class connects you with a teacher from your own home. Position your camera far enough back to show your head, hands and feet, with light in front of you. Clear furniture and loose rugs from the movement area and discuss the floor with the teacher before practising footwork or turns.
The useful difference from learning only through videos is the feedback loop: show an assigned phrase, receive a correction and try it again. Internet sound delay can affect simultaneous rhythm, so listen to the instruction and follow the teacher's cues about when to demonstrate rather than assuming everyone will sound perfectly in sync.

Plan your online learning
Live format and feedback
Choose group or one-on-one video-call classes; ask which suits your level. Keep your full body and feet in frame, with a stable camera, reliable internet and clear music. Confirm the platform before class.
Placement and practice
Tell the teacher about your experience and goals before choosing a level. Kathak begins with posture, tatkar, rhythm and recitation, then builds toward compositions and abhinaya. Ask for practice tasks between classes. Progress depends on readiness, attendance and practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start if I have never danced before?
Yes. Beginner teaching starts with posture, rhythm, basic hand positions and footwork. Tell the teacher you are completely new so placement and explanations start at the right point.
Do I need ghungroo or a costume for the demo?
Do not buy bells or performance clothing before speaking with the teacher. Start with comfortable clothes, a stable connection, a full-body camera view and a clear practice space; ask about your floor and footwear.
Can I join from another country?
Yes. Share your city or time zone and suitable local times in the enquiry form. Teaching is arranged at mutually convenient local times, with daylight-saving changes handled in the timetable. Your demo is FREE.
